Last January, after pressure from UAW members at UCSF, the University made the commendable decision to implement BayPass ahead of the schedule negotiated in our 2022 contract. By every metric, the program has been a huge success! 85% of union members surveyed said BayPass would allow them to use transit more or much more often than they did before, making this program a crucial step toward UCSF meeting its climate goals.
On top of that, the positive impact BayPass has had on academic workers’ lives can’t be overstated. BayPass participation has allowed people to move to areas better suited to the needs of their families, which is crucial for our quality of life. It has cut down commutes, saving time and stress. BayPass provides easier access to campus, helping workers build community and aiding our productivity. For international scholars, who often don’t have driver’s licenses, BayPass helps us adjust to life in a new country. Finally, the Bay Area has one of the highest costs of living in the world. For many workers, the free BayPass is an essential part of how we make ends meet each month.
Now is the time to expand BayPass to campuses throughout the Bay Area, not cut this essential benefit or reduce its accessibility by imposing a fee. We, the undersigned, researchers and UAW members at UCSF, call on UCSF to continue participation in the BayPass program and to keep BayPass free for workers. By doing so, UCSF will continue to lead the UC system on reducing emissions and improving the quality of life of its workers. We are proud to have won this excellent program through our union, and we’re prepared to stand together as union members to protect it.
